Cruising Stories
These books are about how some cruisers have done it, whether it's coastal sailing around the Mediterranean or around the world past Cape Horn.
By the Grace of the Sea: A Woman's Solo Odyssey Around the World by Pat Henry
Pat Henry has done it alone and on very little money. She would paint water colours and then sell them along the way to finance her nine year voyage.
Cape Horn: One Man's Dream, One Woman's Nightmare by Reanne Hemingway-Douglass
Cape Horn: The Logical Route by Bernard Moitessier
Bernard Moitessier is my favourite sailing story author. Wish he had written more...
Cruising in Serrafyn by Lin and Larry Pardey.
Lin and Larry are my ultimate heroes when it comes to sailing. I read their books long before I had my own first sailboat and they inspired me to "go small, go now." They built their own boats, the first one, Serrafin, only 24-feet long and with NO engine and sailed her for many years before building a "big boat" which is only 30 feet long. One of my goals was to follow in their footsteps and cruise without an engine. I did this for two years in the Sea of Cortez on my 26-foot International Folkboat.
Dove by Robin Lee Graham
This is the book that got me started. It's a story of a 16-year old who sails around the world alone on a 24-foot boat.
How to Sail Around the World by Hal Roth
Maiden Voyage by Tanya Aebi
A 17-year old girl who sails alone around the world on a 26-foot Contessa.
My Old Man and the Sea: A Father and Son Sail Around Cape Horn by David Hays and Daniel Hays
The Long Way by Bernard Moitessier
World Cruising Routes by Jimmy Cornell

Survival and Heavy Weather
These books will give you goose pimples and you'll end up wondering what possessed you to even consider sailing past the marina entrance. But you will. It's an addiction.
Adrift
by Steven Callahan, is one of those books I just couldn't put down. I love reading about survival because I hope those stories will teach me how not to get into situations that require survival skills and yet teach me those skills just in case. Steven Callahan survived 78 days in a leaky life raft in the middle of the Atlantic after his sailboat sunk, simply because he refused to give up.I don't think I learned my lesson, because even though I had read the book long before crossing the Atlantic, we didn't HAVE a life raft - just a semi-inflated dinghy lashed up on deck. But I do believe that my will to live has kept us safe during that voyage.
